<p>Companies and leaders in today&#8217;s <span>knowledge economy are beginning to recognise that traditional command and control methods of leadership are no longer the most effective way to inspire the best from people. Instead there&#8217;s a growing <span>recogni</span></span>tion <span>that networked <span>collabora</span></span>tion is the way of the future.</p>
<p><span><span>Ok</span></span><span>, I am bias because <span>collabora</span></span>tion is one of our founding values and I have issues with 80&#8217;s management theory. Words like power and  control, creep me out.</p>
<p>But no use complaining right, one must act hence our new venture - Worknow - where we connect talented people willing to trust and collaborate with each other and support flexible forms of work such as contract, project, freelance, and volunteer work.</p>
<p>Now, I noticed recently my tendency to sing about co-operation when contemplating ways to collaborate which raises two questions.</p>
<h3>Are collaboration and cooperation the same thing?</h3>
<p>They are defined quite differently by <a href="http://www.dictionary.com">www.dictionary.com</a> </p>

<p>3. willingness to cooperate: to indicate cooperation. </p>
<p>4. Economics. the combination of persons for purposes of production, purchase, or distribution for their joint benefit: producers&#8217; cooperation; consumers&#8217; cooperation. </p>
<p>5. Sociology. activity shared for mutual benefit.</p>
<p>6. Ecology. mutually beneficial interaction among organisms living in a limited area.</p></blockquote>

<p><span>Yet, I always &#8220;assumed&#8221; an interdependence becasue by my understanding effective <span>collabora</span></span>tion requires co-operation. But now to the next question, which speaks even greater volumes about my education&#8230;</p>
<h3>Why this song? &#8220;Co-operation, makes it happen. Co operation, working together&#8221;</h3>
<p> Clearly it was a song lyric from somewhere and when I goggled the lyrics I was not at all surprised to find that its actually one of the regular skits from an influential childhood programme&#8230;go on, take a guess. Here&#8217;s a clue. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12&#8230;</p>
<p><span>Yes, apparently my entire philosophy around <span>collabora</span></span>tion stems from the <span>Muppet&#8217;s</span> on Sesame Street. Which in turn supports my belief that early <a title="education and entrepreneurial culture" href="http://blog.worknow.co.nz/2009/05/entrepreneurship_mentors_community/" target="_blank"><span>education is a great place to develop a more collaborative and entrepreneurial culture</span></a>.</p>

<p>Governments including the USA and Australia are touting &#8220;green collar&#8221; jobs as a way to create new forms of work and aid economic recovery. The ever expanding Green sector encompasses industry and fields from engineering and planning to science and management, from construction to manufacturing and retail of alternative energy sources such as solar, wind and wave energy.</p>
<h3>Copenhagen Climate Summit 2009</h3>
<p>This year the environment will receive some serious attention with the international effort to address climate change culminating with the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, 7-18 December.</p>
<p>Already campaigns supporting environmental reform are in full swing. Global Environmental, Humanitarian and Animal Welfare organisations are taking a united stand to raise awareness on climate change.</p>
<p>Celebrities encourage people to <a href="http://www.signon.org.nz">Sign on</a> with slogans from the likes of  Ex NIWA Jim Salinger stating &#8220;The Science is bloody obvious&#8221;.</p>
<p>And with a ground swell of support, grass-root movements such as <a href="http://freezenz.wordpress.com/video/">350Aotearoa freeze</a> sees people of all ages and backgrounds taking a statue like stand, to raise awareness and get people to question &#8220;what&#8217;s all this about?&#8221;</p>
<h3>Growth of Contract Jobs in Green Market</h3>
<p>Indeed, increased environmental awareness bodes well for the emerging Green industry which is already proving that it can create new jobs. Not only is the expanding industry creating &#8220;employment&#8221; but contract work too.</p>

Hence, it is likely that  with the growth of Green Industry, we too will experience growth in the number of contract opportunities.</p>
